Replace them together, then you will have no doubt.
Genuine Synchron (equal to, or better than, the original) motor
Fits all MECHANICAL Lathem punch clocks. 
If it is a blue date/time stamp (long, narrow, costs over $500), this is the wrong motor
If it uses a cartridge ribbon, this is the wrong motor for you, as well
